Mississippi CME and nursing CE requirements
Continuing education and license renewal rules for physicians, advanced practice clinicians and nurses licensed in Mississippi, as recorded by ClinLicense for planning.
Planning aid only. ClinLicense is not legal or compliance advice. Boards change rules between cycles, so confirm every requirement with the board before you rely on it.
- Licensing board
- Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure
- License renewal
- Every 1 year
MD CME requirements
Reviewed 2026-10-31 This entry was last reviewed on 2026-10-31. That date records our own review and is not a board approval. Some details below are marked for confirmation, so treat those as unverified until the board confirms them. Always confirm with the board before you rely on it.
- Total hours
- 40 hours every 2 years, with at least 40 in Category 1 or the equivalent
- License renewal
- Every 1 year
Required topics
No mandated topics are recorded for this profession in this state. That is not the same as the board having none, so confirm with the board.
Notes. 40 Category 1 hours per 2 years (confirm). The license itself renews every year, so renewalYears is 1 while the CME window is 2. Controlled-substance rules exist; not captured.

NP CME requirements
Not yet verified Not yet verified, confirm with the board. This entry has not been checked against the board’s own published rules.
- Total hours
- 40 hours every 2 years
- License renewal
- Every 1 year
Required topics
| Topic | Hours | How often | Applies to | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pharmacology | 5 | Every cycle | Everyone | Controlled substances CE per the board's APRN page (5 hours, required even without a DEA registration); Rule Part 2815 text says 10 hours, so confirm |
Notes. 40 contact hours per 2-year period (even-year renewal), up to 20 carryover hours; first-renewal exemption for new graduates. Conflict on controlled-substance hours between the board APRN page (5) and Part 2815 (10). Rechecked 2026-11-03: the board's current APRN page and FAQ describe national certification plus 5 controlled-substance hours, and Part 2815 was repealed in February 2020, so this block may be out of date. Confirm with the board.
PA CME requirements

Notes. Board PA CME page (30 Miss. Admin. Code Part 2615, Chapter 1, Rule 1.9): 100 hours per two-year cycle, 50 Category 1 (ACCME, AAPA, AMA or AOA); current NCCPA certification satisfies the whole requirement. Cycle starts July 1 of even-numbered years; PA license renews annually May 1 to June 30.
CRNA CME requirements

- Total hours
- 40 hours every 2 years
- License renewal
- Every 1 year
Required topics

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pharmacology | 5 | Every cycle | Everyone | Controlled substances CE; page says it applies to NPs, CRNAs and CNMs. Rule text says 10; confirm |
Notes. CRNAs have no prescriptive authority in MS but must still keep the controlled-substance CE per the board's APRN page. Rechecked 2026-11-03: the board's current APRN page and FAQ describe national certification plus 5 controlled-substance hours, and Part 2815 was repealed in February 2020, so this block may be out of date. Confirm with the board.
CAA CME requirements
Not yet verified Not yet verified, confirm with the board. This entry has not been checked against the board’s own published rules.
- Total hours
- Not recorded, and the renewal cycle is not recorded
- License renewal
- Every 1 year
Required topics
No mandated topics are recorded for this profession in this state. That is not the same as the board having none, so confirm with the board.
Notes. Secondary source; confirm with the board. The CU Anschutz AA program list (states where AAs work by license, regulation or certification, or by physician delegation) and the BYU 2023 list of authorized states do not include Mississippi, so no state licensure for anesthesiologist assistants was found. This is not confirmed on a board or statute page.
Mississippi nursing CE requirements
Nursing boards usually count continuing education in contact hours rather than CME credits, and the nursing license renews on its own schedule, which may differ from the medical board dates above. Nurse practitioners and nurse anesthetists have their own sections above.
Nurse Licensure Compact Mississippi has implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact. A registered or practical nurse whose primary state of residence is Mississippi can hold a multistate license issued by Mississippi, which carries the privilege to practice in the other compact states, and a nurse with a multistate license from another compact state can practice in Mississippi under that privilege. Renewal and CE for a multistate license follow the rules of the home state that issued it. The compact covers RN and LPN/LVN licenses only, and advanced practice authority is still granted state by state. This compact list was last reviewed on November 3, 2026. Read the compact guide for RNs and LPNs.

RN licenses expire December 31 of even-numbered years.

The Board's APRN page says national certification satisfies the general CE requirement and that every APRN must also complete 5 contact hours directly related to controlled substances each 2-year certification period, uploaded to CE Broker, whether or not the APRN holds a DEA registration. RN and APRN licenses renew every two years in even-numbered years (September to December).
Clinical nurse specialists (CNS)
No separate CNS license with its own continuing education rule is recorded for Mississippi. Some states do not license this role as an advanced practice registered nurse, and some fold it into the RN rules, so confirm the position with Mississippi Board of Nursing.

Plan this renewal
Use the free opioid CME planner to see the controlled-substance rules for Mississippi next to other states, or the license cost calculator to estimate fees. Read how multi-state CME works if you hold more than one license.
Nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologist assistants usually also maintain national certification, which has its own cycle. The recertification basics guide explains how that fits alongside state rules. Nurses who hold licenses in more than one state can read the Nurse Licensure Compact for RNs and LPNs.
