The statute sets no APRN hour count; the Board of Nursing site, which is not confirmed here, is reported to say current certification on file covers the RN 24-contact-hour requirement and that APRN CE is set by the certifying organization. Confirm with the board.

Minnesota nursing CE requirements
Nursing boards usually count continuing education in contact hours rather than CME credits, and the nursing license renews on its own schedule, which may differ from the medical board dates above. Nurse practitioners and nurse anesthetists have their own sections above.
Nurse Licensure Compact Minnesota is not a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact. Nurses practicing in Minnesota need a Minnesota license, and a multistate license from a compact state does not cover practice there. The compact covers RN and LPN/LVN licenses only, and advanced practice authority is still granted state by state. This compact list was last reviewed on November 3, 2026. Read the compact guide for RNs and LPNs.

Notes. Minnesota Rule 6310.2800 subp. 3: at least one contact hour of acceptable CE for each month of registration, which is 24 hours for a full 24-month period. Hours can be deferred if short, and current national certification does not replace deferred hours. The registration period ends on the last day of the licensee's birth month in an even or odd year matching the birth year (6310.2600).

Notes. Minnesota Statutes 148.231 subd. 1(c) requires current national certification in the APRN role and population focus for renewal. The APRN also holds an RN license, so the RN rule of one contact hour per month of registration (24 hours per 2-year period) applies to that license; the statute and rules give no separate APRN hour count, and the Board website is not confirmed here, so confirm with the Board.

Nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologist assistants usually also maintain national certification, which has its own cycle. The recertification basics guide explains how that fits alongside state rules. Nurses who hold licenses in more than one state can read the Nurse Licensure Compact for RNs and LPNs.
