Kansas nursing CE requirements
Nursing boards usually count continuing education in contact hours rather than CME credits, and the nursing license renews on its own schedule, which may differ from the medical board dates above. Nurse practitioners and nurse anesthetists have their own sections above.
Nurse Licensure Compact Kansas has implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact. A registered or practical nurse whose primary state of residence is Kansas can hold a multistate license issued by Kansas, which carries the privilege to practice in the other compact states, and a nurse with a multistate license from another compact state can practice in Kansas under that privilege. Renewal and CE for a multistate license follow the rules of the home state that issued it. The compact covers RN and LPN/LVN licenses only, and advanced practice authority is still granted state by state. This compact list was last reviewed on November 3, 2026. Read the compact guide for RNs and LPNs.

Notes. K.A.R. 60-9-106: 30 contact hours of approved continuing nursing education completed within the most recent 2-year licensing period, with no carry-over of extra hours, and 15 hours may come from instructor credit; CME counts only through an individual offering approval. The first renewal of a license expiring within 30 months of the licensing exam, and a renewal within 9 months of reinstatement or endorsement, need no hours (K.S.A. 65-1117). Licenses expire on the last day of the licensee's birth month, in odd years for odd birth years and even years for even birth years (K.A.R. 60-3-108). The board sets no mandatory CE topics.

K.A.R. 60-11-113: APRN licenses renew on the same biennial cycle as the RN license, and each renewing APRN needs 30 contact hours of approved CNE related to the advanced practice role in the prior license period, with no carry-over; all of it also counts for the RN license. Kansas licenses CNMs and CNSs as APRN roles, but the rule is written for APRNs as a group.

Use the free opioid CME planner to see the controlled-substance rules for Kansas next to other states, or the license cost calculator to estimate fees. Read how multi-state CME works if you hold more than one license.
Nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologist assistants usually also maintain national certification, which has its own cycle. The recertification basics guide explains how that fits alongside state rules. Nurses who hold licenses in more than one state can read the Nurse Licensure Compact for RNs and LPNs.
